NedRailways - expertise in rail

NedRailways’ strength is built on the wealth of rail industry knowledge and experience within our parent company NS. We actively support the performance of our operating companies through structured programmes designed to draw on this knowledge and exchange best practice in all areas of operation. Through this approach we give our customers what they most expect: service quality, cost effectiveness, and innovation.

Encouraging & facilitating
best practice exchange

NedRailways has pioneered a structured programme to encourage and facilitate the exchange of best practice across its companies. It focuses on operational challenges, and brings together the people with most experience in dealing with those challenges.

NS is the main train operator in the Netherlands. As a wholly owned subsidiary of NS, NedRailways is able to draw on decades of experience and expertise from a company which operates reliable, punctual and innovative services in one of the highest density networks on the continent. Based on recognised European performance levels NS also ranks as one of the highest performing train companies.

Helping to shape the industry structure

As part of our best practice programme, NedRailways is focused on contributing to the policy debates within the rail industry about regulatory structures as well as procurement processes and contracts. NedRailways works with a number of UK organisations and offers exchange programmes to facilitate this work.

Successful partnerships

We have established positive relationships with Merseytravel and the Northern PTEs, passenger councils and other stakeholders. We put significant effort in helping our partners to achieve their goals.

In the UK we have an equal joint venture with Serco, one of the world’s leading public service companies. Together we won the 25-year Merseyrail franchise in 2003, which is already profitable and today recognised as one of the best performing franchises in the UK, and in December 2004 the joint venture was awarded the Northern franchise, which is the largest in the UK, covering 2,800km of track and serving more than 180,000 passengers a day.

In Germany we operate through our subsidiary NedBahnen Germany.
